Plaza Community Services provides child care to the most economically disadvantaged families in East Los Angeles. Many of the families we serve are blue collar workers who earn less than minimum wage. The state child development program gives priority to families with children that have been abused, neglected, referred by the court and children from low income families who work, attend school, incapacitated, seeking permanent housing or are seeking employment.

Plaza has three State Child Development Centers in East Los Angeles and one State Child Development Center in Silver Lake that serve 200 children from 0 to 5 years of age. Each classroom is staffed by a qualified Teacher and assistants, working under the supervision of the Site Supervisor and Program Director. to meet the families’ rigorous work schedules, the centers in East Los Angeles are open from Monday through Friday, five days per week, except holidays from 6:30a.m to 6:00p.m.. The Silver Lake site is open from 7:00am to 5:00pm. We provide two healthy meals and snacks every day.

We also have a Family Child Care Home Educational Network that serves over 300 children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age throughout East Los Angeles and neighboring cities. The days and hours of operation of our home network are determined at each home and may differ.
Activities for the children in our center-based programs are based on Imagine-It and Core Knowledge, both of which are research based curriculums. The teachers offer activities that promote and support learning and cognitive, language, social, emotional and physical development. The program provides:

  • A balance of indoor and outdoor activities each day.
  • All children are encouraged to participate in all activities.
  • A balance of teacher-initiated and child-initiated activities.

Sites and Family Child Care Homes partnered with our EHS-CCP Program utilize the Creative Curriculum for Infants, Toddlers and Twos.
Each child’s progress is assessed based on the Desired Results Developmental Profile. Children are assessed within 60 days of enrollment in the program and every six months thereafter. In addition, we utilize the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale/Family Child Care Environment Rating Scale and a parent survey to evaluate the program to assist in making program modifications to improve the quality and delivery of services.
